Bermuda pays tribute to Island's `Mr. Heritage'
ceremony last week.
The life of the late Reggie Ming, who worked tirelessly to promote Bermuda's historical heritage, was celebrated during the presentation of a prize shield for this year's Heritage Day float.
Guests at the presentation, which took place at the Ministry of Youth and Sport on Thursday, included Sir John Plowman, Elder Statesman of Bermuda, local historian Mrs. Joyce Hall, Gary Burgess, the Current director of Heritage Day, and Heather Wilson, Cultural Affairs Officer, to whom the shield was presented, and Devonshire MP Michael Dunkley, representing the parish which won this year's float competition.
Poet Leon Edmead, who was also at the presentation spoke of how easy it was to forget our local heroes.
"He was a true gentleman who did an incredible amount for Bermuda,'' he said.
"He coordinated the Heritage Day from 1975 to 1984.'' "Its really great to know that this shield here will be given every year for the best parish float because Reggie Ming was a Devonshire man and the committee saw fit that it would be for the best parish, he added. "Reggie was a genuine character.
Ms Wilson said: "We are very pleased to receive this plaque from Mr. Edmead Certainly Mr. Ming is one of our heroes and we want to make sure that he is not a forgotten hero, and by having this plaque, this will help to ensure that he is remembered.'' Mrs. Joyce Hall was called on to give a few impromptu words about Reggie and she gamely stepped up to the challenge.
"I knew Reggie for a very long time, we worked together on a number of projects, one of the projects that we worked on was the Heritage Magazine. I had an article in nearly every edition, certainly the first edition Pembroke Church and Secondly, I think perhaps the biggest project that we worked together on was the Sir George Somers statue which is in St. Georges on Ordnance Island. I was the treasurer and Reggie was the fund raiser for the most part. We worked together long and hard to raise the necessary funds for that to be made.''It is a wonderful idea to have something to keep his memory alive for those who will forget and people do forget very, very quickly.''
