Bermuda Regiment Band set to widen its horizons
Overseas audiences will soon be treated to entertainment from the Bermuda Regiment Band and Corps of Drums.
The Regiment is making final preparations for two weeks of training and performances in the United Kingdom.
Regiment spokesman Lt. Stephen Caton said the band was last in England 15 years ago. More than 40 personnel will be making the trip.
Under the command of The Director of Music, Major Barrett Dill, and Drum Major Al Furbert, the Band and Drums are due to leave the Island tomorrow.
Lt. Caton said: "The Band and Corps of Drums are highly recognisable part of the regiment and are also great ambassadors for Bermuda.'' He added: "The trip, while rewarding to participants will also achieve great publicity.'' Major Dill explained: "Our itinerary is filled with rehearsals and performances, but we will also be busy ourselves with military skills training as part of our secondary role of internal security. We will be principally housed at Chicksands Barracks in Bedforshire and will be centred around London.
"The highlights of the visit include attending The Royal Tournament at Earl's Court. This is the last year that this event will be held in that location.
"The Tournament is an all encomposing military spectacle that will feature elements of the Royal Air Force Marines and British Army.'' The band will also have a special performance saluting Major Laurie Dunn at his home in West Sussex.
The 98-year-old Major was the first Director of Music of The Bermuda Regiment upon amalgamation in 1965 and is also the composer of the Bermuda Regiment March.
Major Dunn will be presented with a special edition copy of the Bermuda Regiment March Song as composed by Major Dill.
The band's hectic schedule will also include a performance for 1,500 soldiers at the summer gathering of the Royal Anglian Regiment, with which Bermuda Regiment is affiliated. A central London performance at the Matheson Building is also scheduled.
The Regiment's commanding officer, Lt. Col. Patrick Outerbridge and Regimental Sergeant Major Warren Furbert will be in attendance for a number of the events.
