Bridge out of action again
Bridge broke down for the second time this month.
This time the problem was caused by an electrical failure. Eleven days ago delays were experienced when a technician's error caused the bridge to malfunction.
Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons explained what had sparked yesterday's problems. He said that while the operator was closing the bridge, shortly after noon, a main electrical circuit breaker blew and "nothing would work''.
He added: "The US Navy, which is in charge of maintaining the bridge, and the Works and Engineering mechanical division, which is responsible for operating it, were able to close the bridge.
"I don't know what caused the circuit to blow, but the bridge will not be opened (for marine traffic) again until we find out what happened.'' Mr.
Gibbons added that the US Navy would be looking into the problem.
"The Longbird Bridge has had a series of problems, some of which have been operator error, but this would appear to be an electrical problem.'' One irate man, who was travelling east along the Causeway when the bridge jammed, said he just turned around and went back to work.
"This makes me so mad. I waited for a half an hour. It is a real inconvenience for people trying to get home,'' he said.
