Carole Holding provides great gifts for all tastes

Ms. Holding conjured up some family receipes and launched a thriving new line of chutneys, pickles, mince meat with brandy, lemon curd, jams and mustards which sell for about $4.50 to $6.

Ms. Holding said, "These jams and things are truly selling well. It is a task to keep the shelves filled in the Front Street store.

"I thought that visitors and locals would enjoy sampling some of my favourite preserves and condiments. I really enjoy cooking in my spare time.'' One of the most popular jams is the Peach Extra Jam with amaretto and these make delicious small Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers.

Ms. Holding shared, "All the jams are made for me in England. One of my ingredients includes Gosling's Bermuda rum! The other liquors used are champagne, ameretto, brandy and whiskey.

Few locals may know that this beloved artist is a qualified professional chef who gained her AMHCI diplomas with credit in 1962. Ms. Holding also is a Dame de la Chaine des Rotisseurs.

Ms. Holding's shoppes offer interesting arrays of holiday gifts. The banana leaf angels are lovely and there are many nice brass lanterns and interesting brass pieces.

There are many scrimshaws, the art of carving and ingraving whaling stories and memorabilia. It was a popular art form during the middle of the 19th century. They are usually carved from whalebone or whale and walrus ivory.

Ms. Holding explained, "Scrimshaw is derived from the ancient celtic word, scrimshirk, meaning idle worker. Early scrimshaw is very valuable. The art did not become popular in the US until President John F. Kennedy became an enthusiastic collector.''
