Communication is vital for seniors
By the year 2000, it is estimated that at least ten percent of the population will be over 65.
One of the major challenges that seniors, and all concerned citizens must face, is how to ensure that seniors are provided with opportunities to be useful, contributing members of the community. I believe that communication is the key factor in determining to what extent seniors are able to contribute.
As people age, the communication opportunities, communication partners and possible communication topics are likely to be decreased. Retirement, parents dying and children leaving home are all normal events that impact on communication.
Failing eyesight, reduced hearing and inability to move around without assistance are conditions that favour passive communication such as, staying at home and watching television and listening to radio. Nevertheless, on a Sunday morning, people of all ages can share in an oral history programme, where seniors are the life and soul of a great show.
Storytelling is a natural way for seniors to communicate to each other and to others, as well. Additional projects could involve seniors telling stories, based on their personal experiences, to school children in the various parishes. It would provide an enjoyable outlet for social interaction, improve self esteem and promote a feeling of contributing to society.
Other programmes that offer opportunities for sharing between seniors and youngsters are "adopt-a-grandparent'', "special friends'', and "reading partners''. Such programmes foster a warm attitude toward seniors, through positive interaction in a controlled setting.
During the Christmas period, Bermuda's nursing homes are visited by numerous community groups bringing cheer, well wishes and gifts. Groups include pre-school to high school students, church groups, youth groups and other community service groups. After one such visit from a high school group, a senior spontaneously proceeded to treat the students to a few fine piano selections.
Meaningful communication can have a powerful effect on a senior's sense of well being, while enhancing the satisfaction of others as well. Communication can ease the pain of loneliness, dispel boredom and give real meaning to a person's existence. Sharon Swan, Matron, Lefroy House.
