Course offered to citrus growers

citrus culture in Bermuda to help enthusiasts learn all about citrus trees and to learn how to graft their own.

Two separate courses are scheduled for late September, one for commercial producers and one for home growers. Commercial growers will be offered a two-day course while private growers can enroll for a one-day session. A variety of topics relating to citrus culture will be covered including grafting, planting, fertilizing, and pruning citrus.

The course will also cover general maintenance of citrus orchards as well as pests, diseases of citrus, and their control.

Each participant will leave with his or her own grafted citrus tree. In addition, commercial growers will receive a supply of rootstocks and budwood.

The courses are tentatively scheduled for Thursday and Friday, September 25 and 26, for commercial growers, and Saturday, September 27 for home growers.

Those interested should contact Terry Lyn Thompson at the department's Plant Protection Laboratory at 236-4201 by June 30 to allow planning time. As space is limited the courses will operate on a first come first-served basis. The price of the course is $50 for home growers and $200 for commercial growers.
