The 47-year-old Masterworks trustee reached London shortly before noon Bermuda time, having set out from Edinburgh, Scotland on May 24.

A final tally awaits his return to Bermuda, but his ride to date has brought pledges of more than $100,000.

While he was feeling "aches and pains'' after dismounting from his touring bike, Mr. Butterfield said from London he was "overjoyed that it all went so well''.

The major obstacle he overcame was a strong headwind and he sometimes wondered if he should have cycled the route in the other direction.

He cycled about 40 to 60 miles a day on secondary roads, with his wife Jill driving ahead in a car.

In past years, Mr. Butterfield has raised money for Masterworks by running London Marathons.

A major goal of Masterworks is to repatriate art by Bermudians or about Bermuda.

Mr. Butterfield, who returns to Bermuda on Sunday, cycled from the Scottish National Gallery to the National Gallery in London, presenting the director of each museum a recently-published book detailing the registered charity's collection.

The Masterworks Bermudiana Collection was written by Ms Patricia Calnan, a journalist at The Royal Gazette . The trip was also intended to raise funds toward acquiring a work by American Modernist Charles Demuth.
