Demand for dental hygienists grows

Works with dentists as part of a dental health team. Educates and motivates people to maintain good oral health. Cleans and polishes patient's teeth.

Applies fluoride, desensitising agents and fissure sealants to teeth to prevent tooth decay.

Also takes medical and dental histories, exposes and develops dental x-ray film and makes impressions of teeth. May give talks on dental health in schools, help in research projects, or teach.

Job Outlook Excellent as more and more people appreciate the benefits of retaining a healthy set of teeth. Full-and part-time positions are becoming available.

Education Good grades in biology, chemistry or human biology Training/Work Experience A two- to four-year course at an accredited dental school or college in North America, leading to a degree or diploma in Dental Hygiene. An equivalent qualification can be obtained in one year in the UK but admission is highly competitive.

Work experience as a dental surgery assistant is desirable.

Personal: A keen scientific interest High degree of manual dexterity Good communication skills Ability to understand and interpret technical instructions High standard of personal hygiene and grooming Earnings Between $800-$1,200 per week, related to experience, efficiency and expertise.
