Recent improvements in infection control have been adopted worldwide by the dental profession to combat the threat of hepatitis, HIV infection and other infectious diseases that can affect the health of dentists, dental staff and patients, a Health Department spokesman said.

In Bermuda, senior Dental Health Officer Dr. Mark Coulby said, infection control standards are being updated and a process to ensure compliance is being developed.

"Professional standards for infection control are evolving rapidly,'' he said, "and the people of Bermuda have a right to expect that our health care facilities meet or exceed international standards.'' The department is bringing in Dr. James A. Cottone, professor and director of the division of oral diagnosis/oral medicine at the department of dental diagnostic science at the University of Texas Health Centre in San Antonio.

Dr. Cottone will be the guest lecturer at the workshop which will include discussion on patient screening and an update on infectious diseases as they affect the dental practice.

Dr. Cottone has written four textbooks on these subjects and is internationally known for his work in viral hepatitis, AIDS and infection control as they relate to the dental profession.
