DJ opens Atlanta reggae hotspot

A Bermudian DJ will be spinning some local flavour into the downtown Atlanta nightclub scene at his reggae club.

Troy Cann, 28, along with an American partner, is set to take over the "Royal Peacock'' in a bid to become Atlanta's premier hotspot for reggae vibes.

Mr. Cann's dream is almost five years in the making. After DJing while studying at Howard University, Mr. Cann decided to move to Atlanta.

While working under the name "DJ Cann'', he spun records for about three years at 15 Atlanta clubs including "Ethiopian Vibration'' and "Royal Peacock'' while under its previous management.

Business slowed down in Atlanta and Mr. Cann decided to return to Bermuda for a few years.

But Mr. Cann made his trek homewards determined to return to Atlanta and start his own club.

"I even left all my records in Atlanta so I'd be sure to come back,'' he said.

He explained the music industry in Bermuda was very difficult since local sound systems were often not given the exposure they needed or the access to music resources.

"There are 40 or 50 sounds in Bermuda all fighting over playing in one place,'' he said.

"They can spend $50,000 to $100,000 on equipment, dub plates, and public relations and still not be that well-known.

"In Atlanta, there's a lot more going on and a lot more opportunities. Within a year, I could be promoting Bermudian artists on BET (Black Entertainment Television).

"Bermudian artists will have direct exposure internationally -- if not on the radio, then at least in my club,'' he added.

Mr. Cann said the "Royal Peacock'' is located a few blocks from Atlanta's downtown hub area, Five Points.

And he said his club would be unique because "we're coming with a vibe and some guys who are serious about music.''
