Dynamic duo to put on two special weekend fund raisers

Bermuda's singing duo -- His and Hers -- is planning to boost their musical career and inspire the Island's youth.

The team, comprised of 17-year-old Kion Simmons and Berkeley Institute student Sjoniece Fox, have been invited to perform at the famous Apollo Theatre in New York, where many talented amateurs have become international stars.

But in order to get there, the teenage duo must raise $11,000 to cover the costs of this weekends show and the bare essentials for the trip. They hope to do that by drawing large crowds to special performances this weekend at the City Hall.

The group, under the supervision of Gina Spence Productions, will sing a variety of rhythm and blues and ballads.

Mr. Kevin Bean, co-producer and show manager of the production company, said the event will be the duo's first exclusive show.

His and Hers began singing together three years ago after performing at Gina Spence's summer show.

"Since then they have performed as opening acts for international singers who have been brought to Bermuda,'' Mr. Bean added.

Mr. Kion Simmons said: "Going to the Apollo Theatre is a big step because it will show our real talent''.

Sixteen-year-old Miss Fox, an honour-role student, said: "We are not only doing this for ourselves, we are doing it for the youth on the Island. There is a lot of talent here and if young people see us make it then maybe it will encourage them to push towards what they want to do.'' She added that they were both very nervous about going to the Apollo, but believed that they would overcome the stage fright.

"We have to be confident, going to the Apollo is a good way to overcome your fears,'' Mr. Simmons said.

And Miss Fox stressed that the two are hoping to find an agent while in New York. "We have to get someone to see us. Somebody who's somebody''.

The group is planning to spend a week in New York City. They have been invited to sing in five other clubs, one of which is the popular Uptown Comedy Club.

Mr. Bean added that this weekend's fundraiser will be a real treat with a live band, back-up singers, and dancers.

Opening acts will be singer Miss Carol-Ann Williams, Miss Patrina O'Conner and a surprise performance by another entertainer.

The show begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available for $20 at Sabrina's and the City Hall box office.
