Environment the theme of art exhibits

Then listen up! The Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) and The Masterworks Foundation are currently seeking submissions with an ecologica l theme for an art exhibition they will stage in six Hamilton gallery locations in October.

Entitled "Eco-Art,'' the event will give local artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work at the ACE Building, the Colonial Insurance foyer gallery, Rock Island Coffee, Capital G Centre, City Hall, and the Masterworks Gallery on Front Street.

The exhibition, which will run from October 2 to 7, aims to increase environmental awareness in the local community, and artists are asked to depict humanity's unique and delicate relationship with the environment.

"We hope to get several artists involved, and we also hope to display a very broad interpretation of the theme, with pieces ranging from landscapes to sculptural installations,'' Masterworks Foundation organiser, Mrs. Elise Outerbridge, explains.

In addition, public relations officer Kathleen Frith says it is BBSR's aim to use artwork to affect people's emotions about our environment and inspire them to become interested in the work being done to preserve its pristine condition.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of local artists and art collectors, including Mr. Michael Butt, Miss Sharon Wilson, Dr. Charles Zuill, Mrs. Paula Clark-Bedard, and Mrs. Judy Gibbons.

Entries must be submitted by September 15, and prizes will be awarded for the pieces which best exemplify the theme, with a round trip for two to Costa Rica being the first prize. A special opening for supporters of BBSR and the Masterworks Foundation will take place on October 1, which will include an "art crawl'' to all of the galleries where the art is displayed, before proceeding to a reception at City Hall, where the winners will be announced, with remarks by Premier Jennifer Smith.

Artists wishing to submit work for the Eco-Art exhibition should contact Mrs.

Outerbridge at 295-2379 for further information.
