Feng Shui -- the art of living in harmony with your environment
Not advancing fast enough in your career? Maybe your desk is located in a `negative position'. Wish you had a more peaceful night's sleep? Change the position of your bed and see what happens. Money flowing out of your life rather than into it? You may want to install a water feature.
For centuries people have been using Feng Shui to create better health, wealth and happiness. Feng Shui is a complex art involving disciplines from site planning to psychology that explains how our environment effects our lives.
In April international lecturer, author and chairman of The Feng Shui Society, Jon Sandifer will visit Bermuda to facilitate workshops on Feng Shui and health as well as consulting privately. Since 1977 Jon has studied a variety of oriental healing systems including Shiatsu, Feng Shui, Macrobiotics, Oriental Diagnosis and Oriental Astrology.
He is the author of `Acupressure', `Feng Shui Astrology', The Ten Day Re-Balance Programme', and `Piatkus Guide to Macrobiotics'. Jon has a busy Feng Shui practice in London, where he advises businesses, homeowners and celebrities.
He took time off from the book he is currently writing, `Zen and The Art of Cooking' to talk with me.
Camilla: "You have been studying and involved in this field for a long time, what first got you interested?'' Jon: "My interest in Oriental studies began while working my way around the world at the age of 19. I was given a copy of the `Tao Te Ching' ( LaoTzu) and delved into this short book of verses whenever I could. To this day I value its message and insights as it reveals our world, our lives and our journey as one of continual change. Although the terms are not used as such, it is an eye opener into the world of yin and yang, the dynamics that underpin all Oriental studies and traditions.'' Camilla: Is Feng Shui popular in the UK? Jon: Feng Shui is now a household word in the UK. This is largely due to the hundreds of books available, the international magazine Feng Shui for Modern Living, newspaper articles and TV features. In addition, the UK has a thriving Chinese community and we are fortunate to have several practitioners and Masters who have come forward to share their knowledge. Jump in any cab in London and if a chatty driver asks what you do and you reply : Feng Shui -- he knows all about it! However, in New York the response is `Feng what?' Camilla: "You travel extensively teaching Feng Shui. Do you find it becoming more popular worldwide?'' Jon: "Certainly Feng Shui is becoming more popular worldwide with so many books, courses, professional trainings and international conferences. In the past 12 months I have taught Feng Shui in the USA, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Switzerland and Croatia.'' Camilla: "Do you get much call for Feng Shui in the professional design industry?'' Jon: "In the early days of Feng Shui interest, many architects and interior designers would attend talks and seminars and continue to work with basic Form School principles and use the five Elements for colour, shape and design.'' Camilla: "What do you hope people get out of your workshops?'' Jon: "The feedback that I get from my workshops is that people find the information, ideas and suggestions very practical. After 23 years of working with these different Oriental healing systems I am able to clarify what is useful in our contemporary lifestyle and what is inappropriate or impractical.
Participants will also realise how simple and common sense the ideas are and discover, that deep down, they already had a sense of it.'' Camilla: "How can a person's health be benefited by `The Ten Day Re-Balance Programme'?'' Jon: "Real freedom around our health begins by owning it and being responsible for it. The ideas I share in `The Ten Day Re-Balance Programme' are all born out of aspects of Chinese and Japanese healing systems that were originally designed for the prevention of disease rather than as cures. Your creativity, your flexibility, your intuition and your vitality can all benefit from an objective understanding of your current condition matched with taking appropriate action to maintain a balance in diet, lifestyle, exercise and recreation. Its a fun programme and insightful.'' Jon will hold a workshop on Feng Shui, Saturday, April 15th, introducing the underlying principle of Feng Shui. To live in harmony with your environment so that the energy surrounding you works with you rather than against you. You will learn how to assess your home and use Feng Shui remedies to increase your wealth, enhance your health, improve your relationships and protect against misfortune and harm.
On Sunday, April 16th he will conduct `The Ten Day Rebalance Programme' , based on his book. Jon will help you to assess your health and decide your goals. Topics to be covered will be dietary changes, designing levels of activity to suit you, releasing stress through breath, acupressure, yoga and chi kung, altering patterns of behaviour and nurturing your spirit.
