Government and Minnelli strike deal over one-off Zenith show

A one-off show on a cruise ship by superstar entertainer Liza Minnelli was put on with special agreement with the Bermuda Government.

The American singer/actress performed on the Zenith whilst it was moored in Hamilton harbour on Tuesday, after Tourism Minister David Dodwell granted permission for the show.

Normally Government policy discourages entertainment on board vessels in Bermuda, to encourage visitors to spend money on the Island.

Carol Wills, assistant director of tourism, said: "This case involved a corporate group on the ship, they wanted this entertainer to come down but they couldn't find a local venue.

"They approached the minister to see if he could make an exception in this case -- and we did.

"We decided it was acceptable to allow it on the ship on the condition that it was only available to that group.'' It is understood Liza Minnelli flew into Bermuda on Tuesday and stayed at the Southampton Princess. It is not known when she was due to depart.

Minnelli has a reputation as a lively performer and has starred in such hits as Cabaret, where she teamed up with Michael York.
