Guy Fawkes' bonfire feast
when Guy Fawkes and others conspired to blow up the British Houses of Parliament because they resented the Government's attitude towards Roman Catholicism.
Fortunately, the conspirators were caught before the plot succeeded, and they were duly executed.
Thereafter, November 5 has always been known as Guy Fawkes Day, and traditionally, children burn Mr. Fawkes placed in effigy atop a large bonfire.
As with many customs, Bermudians have added their own special touch to the bonfire tradition -- they eat Sweet Potato Pudding while watching the guy burn.
For those who haven't tried it before, here are two versions of the recipe: SWEET POTATO PUDDING 4 cups raw sweet potato (grated) 1 cup butter 2 cups evaporated milk 1 cup corn syrup 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. salt 1 cup raisins (optional) CREAM sugar, butter and spices. Add eggs and beat well. Add raisins, grated sweet potato, milk and syrup. Mix well. Bake in a greased baking pan for 2 hours at 325 degrees F.
Cooktip: When a crust begins to form on the bottom and around the edges, stir the pudding well and allow it to continue baking. (The Bermuda Cook Book by Cecille Snaith-Simmons).
