`Hakim' published
rights and labour leader Dr. E.F. Gordon will go on sale this weekend.
The book, "Hakim: Son of Mazumbo'', is a summary of writings by historian Mr.
Ira Philip, a personal acquaintance of the late Mr. Gordon and a journalist when the late Dr. Gordon, or Mazumbo as he called himself, headed the Bermuda Workers' Association.
The release of the 25-page booklet has also been planned to coincide with the commemorative week of activities to mark Dr. Gordon's 100th birthday.
"About a month ago, Mr. Dale Butler (one of organisers of the week's activities) said it would be a good idea to put something (on Hakim) together,'' Mr. Philip told The Royal Gazette .
"Hakim, about whom I have written several articles, was one of the brightest boys to come through Berkeley Institute.'' In the booklet, Mr. Philip tells of how Mr. Gordon -- formerly known as `Teddy' -- excelled in his senior Cambridge examinations and gained exemption from London University examinations.
He also notes that Hakim -- who later became a philosopher and anthropologist -- went straight from Berkeley Institute to Howard University where his pre-med studies were interrupted by the Second World War.
The booklet also outlines the peaks and valleys of Hakim's adult life, including the fact that he was put on Bermuda's stop list "which barred him, with no reason given, from entering the only place he regarded as home''.
"We're hoping that this type of information will become part of the curriculum in schools,'' Mr. Butler said about the limited edition that cost $6.
Other activities planned for the week include: A Press conference this morning at BIU headquarters to name Bermuda's "first 20 heroes and heroines''; A historical forum at the BIU at 7.30 tonight to highlight events in Dr.
Gordon's life. There will also be a cake cutting in celebration of his birthday; A forum by the committee and 100 Black Men at St. Paul's AME Centennial Hall on Tuesday, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
A forum entitled "Developing and Implementing a Ten-Point Economic Renewal Plan'' at 7.30 p.m. at the BIU on Wednesday; and A play, "Mazumbo'', by local playwright Mrs. Shangri-la Durham Thompson at St. Paul's AME Centennial Hall next Friday and Saturday, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
The Friday night performance will be under the patronage of Mr. Ottiwell Simmons MP and his wife. The second night will be under the patronage of Mr.
Philip and his wife.
The entire week of activities is being held under the distinguished patronage of one Dr. Gordon's daughters, Ms Marjorie Davis who lives in Canada.
GLIMPSE OF THE PAST -- Mr. Dale Butler, left, looks at a copy of Mr. Ira Philip's book "Hakim: Son of Mazumbo''.
