It's a different scene when you own the business

Having made the transition from employee to business owner, musician Dwight Jones has a better appreciation now of what those running a company have to go through.

"I have the utmost respect for all my former employers,'' said Mr. Jones while sitting in his Studio B office this week.

"Now that I'm on the other end I feel like apologising to all of them.

Employers are taking serious risks, they are responsible for the employees and the employees' families. People are depending on them to come through.

"There is a lot of stuff I used to take for granted, like wasting paper...until I had to buy it!'' And while most employees head for home at 5 p.m., Mr. Jones doesn't have such luxuries, as he puts in 12-hour days, six days a week.

"On the odd occasion that I have to work at night I'll knock off during the day and then come back,'' he says, noting that his day at the office often begins at 7 a.m.

"When I was an employee, at five-past-nine I would think `man, it's not five o'clock yet', but now five o'clock comes too soon. I'm trying to get more hours out of the day!'' Mr. Jones leaves the day-to-day running of Studio B in the very capable hands of Cal White Jr., the office manager. That way he can concentrate on the creative side of the business as a producer, composer and engineer.

"I've taken what was a hobby and passion of mine and now have it support me,'' said the proprietor who lists the support from his wife, Sharon, and family, as invaluable.

When asked if Mrs. Jones was the solid rock in the partnership, he quipped: "Yeah, the rock that hits me too if I mess up!'' "I used to put in 18 hours a day but now I put in 12 hours a day, six days a week. There is a lot to be done but as things progress I'll be taking on more people and taking off more hats.

"I don't know what I would do without Cal. I have complete trust in him, and have no doubt in his ability to handle the affairs of Studio B.

"To him it's not just a job. He is a blessing.''
