It's going to be `raining men' during Mother's Day show
By Danny Sinopoli The forecast for Mother's Day is rain, but it's not likely that Bermuda's moms will mind.
It is, after all, going to be raining men, or so the organisers of the 13th annual Gina Spence Productions Mother's Day show and fundraiser have promised.
The show, a fashion, music and comedy extravaganza that is being staged in aid of GSP's yearly summer theatrical production for young actors, is called -- appropriately enough -- "It's Raining Men,'' and it will feature a bevy of muscle-bound models and celebrity guest posers in everything from casual clothing to evening wear.
Among the 17 "gorgeous male models'' who will be strutting across the stage at the Clay House Inn on May 14 are medal-winning high-jumper Mr. Clarence (Nicky) Saunders, ZBM-TV sportscaster Mr. Darren (Butch) Burchall, a handful of bodybuilders from the Olympic Club in Hamilton and numerous footballers from most of the Island's soccer teams, including Dandy Town, BAA, the Devonshire Colts, the Devonshire Cougars and Vasco da Gama.
The models, organiser Ms Claire-Anne Smith said this week, will be showing off clothing that "expresses their characters,'' formal and casual wear that "says `this is me' and `this is who I am.'' In addition, Ms Smith told The Gazette , "there will be door prizes'' for the audience at the show, which will also feature entertainment by His and Hers, the Ufonics, Strike 2, various celebrity impersonators and a comedian.
Said the organiser: "The first 50 ladies will receive a little gift at the door and of course there will be a prize, as there is every year, for the best-dressed mom.'' But while it's the Island's mothers that will largely enjoy the fashion show, it is to be Bermuda's youth -- particularly those "who can't normally afford to be involved with the arts'' -- who will benefit.
As in previous years, the proceeds from "It's Raining Men'' will go toward a youth-oriented GSP workshop of sorts in theatre and acting.
The workshop, an intensive three-month period of training and rehearsals, will culminate in GSP's annual summer production, which is this year called "Masterpiece.'' Every young person who expresses an interest in participating as an actor or otherwise in "Masterpiece'' will be given a role in the production, a medley of "some of the more powerful'' scenes and numbers from previous GSP vehicles that makes it a bit more ambitious as a result.
As such, the organisers said, they are hoping to raise slightly more than the $1,300 to $1,500 that they've acquired in previous years for the mounting of "Masterpiece,'' which is also going to be taken "on the road.'' "This year, we're looking to do some open-air (theatre), to go directly to the public at Dockyard, at the National Stadium and in St. George's,'' producer Ms Gina Spence said this week.
"And we are also hoping we can accommodate people in terms of ticket prices.'' Ms Smith, one of the few adults who will act, sing and dance in the production, added that auditions would be held during the pre-production period, but only for the solo pieces and leading roles.
"Basically, the show is designed to allow children who can't afford to be involved with the performing arts to gain some practical experience with us,'' she said. "We are inviting anyone who might be interested to try out.'' "Masterpiece,'' which is scheduled to run for three nights on August 17 to 19, is open to children five years old and up.
Tickets for the "It's Raining Men'' fundraiser, which begins at the Clay House at 8 p.m. on Mother's Day, cost $20 apiece and can be purchased at either the Music Box or Sabrina's.
Interested parties can also order tickets by calling 292-3945 or 236-8620.
"We are catering especially to the mothers of Bermuda with this show,'' Ms Smith said. "I hope as many of them as possible can come. They will certainly enjoy it.''
