Jazzing it up for Amnesty
weekend.
Jazz celebrities and groups, among them Legacy, Shine Hayward, Jazzology, Somers Isles Jazz Band and George Symonds Quartet, will be onstage during the annual Amnesty International Jazz and Razmatazz festival.
"It will be the largest number ever of jazz musicians assembled at one time in Bermuda,'' promised concert co-ordinator, Ms Lena Ostroff yesterday.
"We wanted to reach out to people who are not aware of the amount of talent here. And it's also something fun to reward our volunteers,'' she added.
The third annual concert, which features all local musicians, is organised by Amnesty's Bermuda Section. Tickets for the concert, which takes place at the Hamilton Princess at 2 p.m. on Sunday, are on sale at Opus 1 and the Music Box for $15, and $20 at the door.
"Amnesty has a history of huge rock concerts and we felt we really wanted to concentrate on local talents,'' Ms Ostroff said.
And she advised jazz fans to buy their tickets early because last year's concert was quickly sold out.
"Tickets are selling like hot cakes,'' she said.
"Anyone who is into the jazz scene but also anyone who likes music would enjoy it. There will be all types of jazz from traditional to a more gospel style.'' Amnesty's Bermuda Section has over 200 active members and is funded entirely by money raised in Bermuda.
Profits from the concert will go toward operating costs and teaching human rights awareness in schools, Ms Ostroff said.
JAZZ AND RAZZMATAZZ -- Jazz musician Mr. Ron Lightbourne, together with other local celebrities, will play at Amnesty International's third annual jazz festival this weekend.
