Kardias Club brings style -- and heart -- to service

ERROR RG P4 8.9.1999 In Friday's Lifestyle article on the Kardias Club, Judy Swan's telephone number was incorrect.

Anyone who wants to contact Mrs. Swan for tickets to the November 6 Kardias Gala featuring gowns by New York designer Amsale should call 293-2113.

The masterminds behind November's fashionable, but charitable, event is the Kardias Club.

The Kardias Club has been quietly doing good deeds since its inception in the 1940s. Back then, the club was known as the Alpha Wives Club, since the 15 founding members were all wives of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity members.

Initially the club was a women's auxiliary, assisting the men in their educational and cultural endeavours.

By 1964, the club changed its name to Kardias, derived from the Greek words `kardia' and `kardiakos' which mean heart.

"We meet monthly at each other's homes,'' said member Deborah Jackson. "We try to keep a low profile and quietly help various community projects.'' Over the years, the Kardias Club has furnished the playroom of the Sunshine League and Hinson Ward at St. Brendan's Hospital, donated kitchen and laundry equipment to the Matilda Smith Williams home and awarded several scholarships.

The Family Learning Centre, Packwood Home, Age Concern and Just Between Us have also received significant donations from the club over the years.

This year, the recently formed charity a Child's Wish, will benefit from the Kardias Club's charitable deeds.

While preferring to discreetly perform random acts of kindness, the Kardias Club is no stranger to the spotlight. In 1993, the group hosted a successful Out Of Africa fashion show that brought down the house at Hamilton's City Hall.

More recent events and activities have included a summer beach party, a casino night and the recent Morning Coffee held in conjunction with the Committee of Six.

And to close out the 20th century in `style', the Club imported the glorious gowns of Amsale.

The evening of Glamour and Romance will kick off at 6.30 p.m.with an open bar and hors d'oeuvres followed by food stations in the hotel's lower foyer.

At 8.15 p.m., patrons will take their seats in the Mid Ocean Amphitheatre to feast their eyes on an array of luxurious evening attire and breathtaking bridal gowns.
