Lack of traditional cooking may affect quality of diet
events through the week, to bring healthy eating habits to the forefront.
The theme this year is "Good Nutrition Based on Tradition''. Many of us can probably remember gathering around the table for family meals, when we were growing up.
However, today's children will most likely not have these same mealtime memories, as life in the 90s has had a significant impact on the traditional family meal.
The main concern with the loss off traditional cooking and eating habits in nutrition terms, is that the quality of the diet may suffer, with a resulting effect on health and well-being.
With a higher proportion of meals taken outside the home, whether at restaurants, as fast foods or convenience foods, the danger lies in the over-consumption of fat and sodium, which are typically higher than in meals prepared "from scratch'' at home.
Of course there are ways to make quick and healthy home cooked meals! And you will find such information in this supplement.
Activities for Nutrition Week this year are centred around the visit of Barbara Dixon from the US. Barbara Dixon is a Registered Dietitian and the author of the book "Good Nutrition for African Americans''.
She will be giving a free Public Lecture on Tuesday May 2, beginning at 8:00 pm at St. Paul's Christian Education Centre, Paget. All are cordially invited to attend and enjoy this dynamic speaker.
Barbara Dixon herself will be on hand at the Bookmart on Tuesday May 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. And the Bookmart has brought in extra copies of her book, which is now available in paperback.
Those who listen to the VSB Sunday morning show with Shirley Dill will have heard her interview Mrs. Dixon yesterday, which started off Nutrition Week 1995.
This morning Barbara Dixon will again be featured on local radio shows, both as a guest of David Lopes and Keebil Burgess.
At lunchtime today, Monday May 1, your nutritional concerns and questions can be answered at an "Ask a Dietitian'' Nutrition Information Booth which will be set up in the Washington Mall from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Here Barbara Dixon will be available along with local Registered Dietitians to give nutritional information.
There will be free leaflets on a variety of different nutritional topics, and if material is not available at that time, those interested can leave a contact address, where further information can be sent at a later date.
The Bermuda Dietetic Association members invite you to get involved in Nutrition Week 1995. The articles in this special Nutrition Week Supplement were contributed by local practising RD's, who encourage you to take a new look at our Bermudian traditions.
