Sunday, when poetry and visual arts merge in a show called `Wavelengths'.

The concept arose through the collaboration of local poet Andra Simons and artist Kendra Ezekiel on Mr. Simons' forthcoming book, `The Joshua Tales'.

Now, approximately 15 local artists and poets, including Bruce Stuart, Dan Dempster, Antoine Hunt, Alicia Tyson and Manuel Palacio, will join forces with resident poets Lauren Francis, Laurel Monksman, Joy Burnham, Carolyn Boatman, Artemis and Alan Smith, among others, in a unique exhibition.

In devising the concept for the show, the West End gallery took several approaches: in some cases artists were paired with poets; in others artists wrote poetry to go with their own work; and in still others various artists were assigned the same poem to interpret.

At the exhibition, viewers will see the related poetry and art hung together.

Sunday's opening reception for `Wavelengths' is from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

This will be followed at 8 p.m. by a live poetry performance, and the evening will conclude with a Flow Sunday open mike at 9 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 6. For further information 234-2809.

Sunday is also the day when the Bermuda Choral Workshop can be heard in a Bermuda Fringe Festival performance at the Anglican Cathedral, beginning at 5 p.m. Ruth Henderson 292-6177 has further information.

To prepare artists for next year's Biennial exhibition, the Bermuda National Gallery is again bringing in professional art critiquer Dr. Susan Masuoka to help resident artists prepare for the show.

During her visit from March 5 to 9, Dr. Masuoka will hold individual sessions with interested artists, when she will examine their work, challenge them with what she sees and help them to amplify what they are attempting to portray in a particular piece.

Artists wishing to meet with Dr. Masuoka should contact Louisa Flannery at 295-9428.

In Boston, Dr. Masuoka is the director of the Tufts University Gallery; also gives critiques at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts School; and teaches art history at Brandeis University. In addition to a Masters degree and Master of Fine Arts degree in design, she holds a doctorate in art history.

Dr. Masuoka will also give a public lecture and slide show entitled `Reading the Vision: Visual Literacy and Bermudian artists' at 6 p.m. on March 6 at the Gallery, where tickets ($15) are now available.

Bacardi Ltd., which sponsors the Biennial Exhibition, is also supporting `critique week'.

The Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) has arranged a series of day-long, free workshops which will explore the creative and business elements of the world film industry. They will be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute auditorium on April 21 at which time film industry leaders from the US, Canada and Ireland will share their knowledge in panel discussions.

The workshops, which are expected to attract people from Bermuda's arts and business communities as well as visiting filmmakers whose work is being screened at the Festival, will begin with a focus on the creative side of filmmaking.

Additional workshops will address the role of the Press in marketing films; film financing, and the marketing and distribution of independent films.

Panelists include Andrew Herwitz, senior vice-president of Aquisitions, Miramax Films (New York); Victor Lowey, chairman, Motion Picture Group, Alliance Atlantis (Toronto); Mark Litwak, film attorney/author, Beverly Hills; Jon Kilik, film producer, New York; Rod Stoneman, chief executive, Irish Film Board; Paul Cohen, CEO, Manhattan Pictures International Inc. (New York); and Roko Belic, writer/director, `Genghis Blues'.

The workshops will be followed by "breakout sessions'', where attendees can meet one-on-one with the panelists. A cocktail party will end the day.

Pre-registration is recommended, and interested persons can do so on the BIFF web site at www.bermudafilmfest.com, or by faxing 293-7769.
