Locals look for honeymoon hideaways: All-inclusive getaways top the list of
Looking for a little peace and quiet, a place where holding hands and stealing kisses is par for the course? A place that is dreamy and picturesque with palm trees and tropical flowers galore, maybe a heart-shaped bed and champagne glass tub.
Planning a honeymoon requires an eye for adventure, a zest for life and a mutual understanding of what would be the perfect spot.
Bermudians who have just been joined in holy matrimony seem to opt for all-inclusive honeymoon packages where they only have to worry about tips and shopping money after paying a lump sum, say local travel agents.
Donna DeSilva, of Butterfield Travel, said most of her local clients like the Pocono Resorts in upstate Philadelphia.
"They like it because of the mountainous setting and lakes. It is romantic and also those particular properties cater to couples,'' Mrs. DeSilva said.
She added: "Some of the amenities in the room consist of heart-shaped or regular shaped pools right in the room along with saunas. And some of the bath tubs are shaped like champagne glasses.
"They also feature round, king-size beds in sunken bedrooms with fire places.
The all inclusive packages which includes dinner and breakfast tipping and nightly entertainment can cost about $1,000 per person.'' Mrs. DeSilva said Bermudians also like the Sandals Resorts which are located on several islands in the Caribbean.
"These resorts which are in St. Lucia, Antigua, Jamaica and the Bahamas are also all-inclusive and they are for couples only,'' Mrs. DeSilva said.
She added: "These resorts will run you more than the Poconos because of the distance.
"Couples staying at Sandals can enjoy swimming up to bars while in the pool and they can not only use all the facilities in that establishment but they can also go from one property to the other. This package would cost about $2,000 per person with a three-night minimum stay.'' And Orlando, Florida is always popular.
"Bermudians going off on a honeymoon seem to aim for a place with all the romantic things, but they have to have a place for shopping.'' She added her latest promotion for honeymoon travel is British Columbia.
"This is a new area that I am trying to promote because it has that natural beauty which is different from here.'' At the Donald Smith travel agency Cinthia Gibbons said most of her local clients aim for Jamaica "because they have all inclusive resorts such as Sandals, Couples, Jamaica Jamaica, and Swept Away.
"They want to go where everything is included in one price such as meals and everything the hotel provides. It is all pre-paid before you go,'' Miss Gibbons said.
She added Caribbean cruises were popular as well. "A few people have asked about Hawaii because they want somewhere different with a warm climate. Most Bermudian couples do Caribbean cruises or they just go to the Pocono. I have never sent anyone to Europe.'' Travel agent Sherry Alvarado of the Travel Connection Bermuda also said the Pocono was ranked number one for honeymooners.
But she added that many of her clients also take cruises or they go to Disney World.
And when it comes to the Sandals resorts she tends to send people to St. Lucia because it is very pretty.
"Orlando has a nice honeymoon package and I am finding that a lot of people are going there because they don't want to spend a lot or they go on a cruise using the Royal Caribbean line,'' Ms Alvarado said.
She added that Cancun, Mexico is also becoming quite popular but "there is not a lot to do so mainly they tend to stay for a few days and then go on a cruise.
"Cruise prices can be quite reasonable and can cost anywhere from around $749 per person and up.'' And she said, "I am pushing for places up in the mountains for people who get married in the winter months. I find that it is more romantic and quiet.
Alaska cruises are also getting more popular for older couples getting married,'' she added.
Meyer Travel's Kim Winter Bean said honeymooners coming through that agency almost always take Caribbean cruises.
"Couples can choose between a three-day, four-day, or seven-day cruise and depending on their budget some may opt for a longer cruise, but normally Bermudians like a seven day cruise through the Caribbean,'' Mrs. Bean said.
Another Meyer agent said some honeymooners choose Hawaii, or New York and Boston because they can't afford to take a real honeymoon. "Some might do Disney World but about 90 out of 100 choose a cruise.'' At Adventure Travel the three travel packages that sell the most are cruises, trips to Hawaii, and the Pocono Resorts.
"They seem to be the most popular and cruises have such good rates that they are the number one choice,'' the agent said.
She added that when travelling to Hawaii, which consists of eight islands, there are a number of options honeymooners can choose from.
"They can either go to one island or they can see a few of them. A good way to see them is to take an American Hawaii Cruise which will take you to about four or five islands,'' the agent said.
