New book deals with fish fauna
recently been produced by Brian Luckhurst.
Mr. Luckhurst is Bermuda's Senior Fisheries Officer and the publication of "Fishes of Bermuda: History, Zoogeography, Annotated Checklist and Identification Keys'' by William F. Smith-Vaniz, Bruce B. Collette and Brian E. Luckhurst addresses the incomplete studies of fish fauna currently available.
Bermuda's status as the world's northernmost coral reef eco-system, its relatively small size and isolated geographic position has stimulated a lot of fish studies. But the new book is sure to serve as the primary reference for ichthyologists, bio-geographers and others who want to know which species of fish has been validly reported from Bermuda, together with the supporting documentation upon which these records rely.
Summaries of the geological history, geography and marine environment of Bermuda are also presented.
The rich history of the utilisation and management of Bermuda's fisheries is discussed as are brief biographies, including nine early naturalists who made important contributions to Bermuda ichthyology.
Identification keys are provided for most of the 433 species known historically from Bermuda as adults and additional 13 species are recorded as juveniles.
A total of 85 species have been added to the known fish fauna of Bermuda and previous reports of 55 species are shown to have been based on misidentifications, unsuccessful introductions or other factors.
Previous unpublished watercolours and observations of Bermuda's fishes made by Col. HM Drummond-Hay, a former Governor of Bermuda between 1847 and 1857, are discussed.
Also some 41 of his watercolours are reproduced on nine colour plates, providing wonderful examples of the blending of art and science.
