New operator for Southside restaurant

Burgers after the US Navy abandoned the military base, has a new lease on life again. Businessman Daniel Pereira , who has a carpentry shop on Southside, St.

David's, has quietly reopened the restaurant as the appropriately named Runway Restaurant , and looking at the menu, greasy fastfood is a thing of the past.

Mr. Pereira is serving eat-in or take-out Indian, Chinese and local cuisine.

And he is open day and night from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. throughout the week and in the evenings from 7-9 p.m. (new hours). He says business has been great so far, and promotions are planned.

*** KEDAR HANDS OVER REINS OF GLOBENET BUC Kedar hands over reins of GlobeNet Telecoms guru and founder of undersea cable company, GlobeNet Communications and long distance carrier TeleBermuda International , Michael Kedar , has handed over the reins to Jerry A. DeMartino , the former president of MCI International. Mr. DeMartino has been named CEO of GlobeNet. Mr. Kedar will concentrate his activities as chairman of the board and continue as a member of the management group.

GlobeNet is expanding TBI's existing submarine cable network to link North and South America via Bermuda. With nearly $1 billion raised to build the system, GlobeNet is poised to be one of the first independent wholesalers of bandwidth to tap into anticipated rapid growth for fibre capacity in Latin America. The first leg of the self-healing ring will be ready next September.

"With his MCI experience Jerry is going to lead us in ushering in the private, independent business model.

"He has the credibility, experience and relationships to make GlobeNet the premier supplier of submarine cable infrastructure,'' Mr. Kedar said.

Cyber Creations announced yesterday the launch of Peddlers , an Internet-based auction site exclusively for residents of Bermuda. Spokesperson Liana Carrick said people can view items, test-drive cars and boats and avoid shipping costs and the hassles involved in returning an item if they do not like it. Sellers can post an item by filling out a simple form.

Buyers can browse through the items on-line, bid using an alias and contact the seller if desired. Since its October 1 launch, Peddlers has already had a number of prospective sellers posting items including a Golf convertible, computer equipment, furniture and boats. *** ICS WINS MCSP PARTNER STATUS BUC ICS wins MCSP partner status A local computer consultancy has won Microsoft Certified Solutions Provider Partner level status and it is expanding to open a marketing and public relations department, it was revealed yesterday. Independent Consulting Solutions , which opened in 1991, installs security as well as support systems to many Bermudian companies. The company has hired five new staff for the new operation and the company offices at Mill Street have been refurbished.

ICS is also about to update its website and further expand its services. It now houses the largest pool of Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers in Bermuda.

*** LIMA APPOINTED SUN LIFE VP, GM APP BUC Lima appointed Sun Life vp, gm Michael Lima has been appointed vice president and general manager at Sun Life Financial Services , after Ann Teixeira was promoted to senior vice president.

Mr. Lima, who is a Bermudian, has been promoted from the post of senior marketing manager and joined Sun Life in 1996.

*** Global Crossing president resigns Bermuda's Global Crossing yesterday announced that Rolla P. Huff , President of North American Operations, will resign his position effective today to pursue other opportunities outside the firm. Joseph P. Clayton , former Frontier Chief Executive Officer and currently Vice Chairman of Global Crossing, will reassume leadership of the North American Operations.

"Rolla has been a great asset to our company over the past 15 months. He raised our visibility on Wall Street, significantly improved our financial systems and controls, and was instrumental in consummating the merger with Global Crossing,'' said Mr. Clayton.
