Oral history book published
days in Bermuda has resulted in a book.
Bermuda Recollections will go on sale on November 15.
The project was the brainchild of Government's Cultural Affairs Officer Miss Ruth Thomas.
She got the group together and urged them to write or tell about growing up in Bermuda.
For more than two years the seniors met at Wednesday afternoon workshops with Miss Thomas and Ms Liz Jones, an English lecturer at Bermuda College.
The 346-page book consists of interviews, transcripts and writings on Bermuda's social life, Saturdays and Sundays, and farming.
There are also pieces on Second World War life, school days, whaling, games, Harem Scarum, weddings, funerals, housewives and housework.
Many photographs are featured.
Miss Thomas expressed her delight with the book, describing it as a must for Bermuda's households.
Sadly four contributors to the book have died.
They were Mrs. Annie Foggo, Mr. Raymond Semos, Mrs. Rena Smith, and Mrs.
Frances Zuill.
Among other contributors are former Government Senate leader the Hon. Sir John Plowman, ex-Speaker of the House of Assembly the Hon. F. John Barritt, writer Mr. Vernon Jackson, founder of the Leopard's Club Mr. Ross Manders, St.
George's guest house owner Mrs. Trew Robinson, and former school principal Mrs. Edna Mae Scott.
Copies of the book can be pre-ordered through the Department of Cultural Affairs (tel: 292-9447).
