The slip-up in legal paperwork would have left Shutters on Burnaby Street unable to serve drinks when it opened last month, but the authorities allowed it to operate under a special charity licence.

So, for its first 13 days, the establishment acted as a showcase for the Masterworks Foundation gallery, and co-owner Mr. John Roach agreed to hand over profits to the charity.

Yesterday, Mr. Roach presented $2,500 to foundation trustee Mr. Tom Butterfield.

"Masterworks got a temporary licence and we had their pictures up and had an art exhibition,'' said Mr. Roach.

"There was a mix up and that was the only licence we could have got.'' Mr. Butterfield said the cash would go towards administration of the foundation, which is building up a public art collection of paintings of Bermuda by internationally-renowned artists.
