Rulers of the waves stand tall
These majestic, intriguing and historic ships have caught everybody's attention -- and are sure to sail away with the imagination of young and old alike when they make their spectacular exit from Bermuda on June 12.
Over the weekend the bulk of the regal tall ships will arrive in local waters.
They will berth in St. George's and Dockyard until June 8 when they sail into Hamilton Harbour. Once docked in Hamilton, a four-day Tall Ships Festival will unfold featuring a variety of events for visitors and locals to enjoy.
With so much to see and do over the next few days, many locals will find that they will have been struck with a case of `so much to do, but so little time'.
Here's a guide to help you navigate the numerous cultural events scheduled during the historic Tall Ships visit: Saturday, June 3: The President's Choice Pops Concert in St. George's at 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 3: A free night of music at the Royal Naval Dockyard beginning at 4 p.m.; Sunday, June 4: The President's Choice Pops Concert in Dockyard at 5 p.m.; Monday, June 5: The Mayor of St. George's will host a reception for the captains and officers of the Tall Ships at Ordnance Island; Tuesday, June 6: Heritage Night, St. George's Town Square from 6 to 9 p.m.; Tuesday, June 6: The Burnaby Gallery will host Nautical Works, featuring the work of artist Terry Elkins, to tie in with the visit of the Tall Ships; Wednesday, June 7: Harbour Night, Front Street, Hamilton from 6 to 9 p.m. It will be followed by a Beating Retreat Ceremony involving the Bermuda Regiment Band; Thursday, June 8: Tall Ships proceed to Hamilton in the afternoon where they will be welcomed by the Gombeys. The Tall Ships Festival, featuring entertainment, food and crafts, will be held on Front Street from 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday, June 9: Open house on a select number of ships between noon and 4 p.m.
The Corporation of Hamilton will host a concert at Barr's Bay Park at 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 10: The Bermuda Regiment Band will lead a Trainees Parade at 6.30 p.m. along Front Street to the City Hall car park.
Kings of the sea The parade will be followed by a 7.30 p.m. prize-giving ceremony where the Governor, Thorold Masefield, will present awards. A 9 p.m. Cultural Talent Show will close the evening; Sunday, June 11: A 4 p.m. Ecumenical Service `Blessing of the Fleet' at the Flagpole on Front Street, Hamilton. The Corporation of Hamilton and Bank of Butterfield will sponsor `Island Flavours', part of the annual Concert in the Park series from 6 to 9 p.m. in the parking lot of City Hall, Hamilton; and Monday, June 12: After the Queen's Birthday Parade on Front Street, the ships will depart the Great Sound for the Parade of Sail along North Shore.
