Salvation Army launches its Red Shield Appeal
Appeal.
The campaign to raise cash for the Army's welfare programmes will run throughout May.
Several hundred volunteers will go door-knocking, hoping for donations. And appeals to Salvation Army supporters will also be made through the post. The campaign was launched this week at a ceremony at the Army's Harbour Light building.
Among those present were the Army's Territorial Chief Secretary Colonel John Busby, Divisional Commander Major Gilbert St. Onge, Chairman of the Advisory Board Mr. Cyril Rance, and Captain Max Barrett.
Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan was there too.
Sir John said Government owed a "debt of gratitude'' to the Salvation Army.
He told how, after becoming Premier, he had been struck by the number of homeless in Bermuda.
Many of the "street people'' had been deserted by their families, or society.
Sir John praised the Salvation Army for doing a "sterling'' job in reaching out to such people.
And he urged Bermudians to be "generous'' in their support of the Red Shield Appeal.
Afterwards, Sir John was presented with a book on the Salvation Army.
`Battle Lines' was written by Commissioner Wesley Harris, the Army's former Territorial Commander for Bermuda and Canada.
