Skin-care terms Here are some common skin-care terms to help you make sense of the new generation of over-the-counter skin care products:

Antioxidants: Chemicals that combat free radicals. Free radicals cause malignancies and destroy connective tissue beneath the skin. Major antioxidants are Vitamins A, C, E and Selenium.

Collagen: A protein that serves as the support structure for the skin.

Exfoliate: To cause shedding of dead skin cells.

Glycolic Acid: The simplest and smallest of a group of naturally-occurring acids which collectively are known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). Many of these acids are found in fruit and other foods -- eg. glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane, citric acid is from citrus fruits and malic acid is from apples. It is used as a chemical peel to slough off dead skin cells and reveal a fresher complexion.

Hypo-allergenic: Less likely to cause allergic reactions; and The Retinoids: A group of drugs (Retin A and Tretinoin) which cause profound and significant changes in the skin.
