Soloist in recital on Sunday

a recital in the Bermuda Cathedral Hall on Sunday evening under the Cathedral Chamber Music Series and Fringe Festival banners.

Soloist Welch, who hails from Buffalo, New York and is currently in Bermuda furthering his vocal studies with Gary Burgess, will present a varied programme of classical music, including lieder by Brahms and Schumann and an aria from Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro .

"The programme covers a large span of musical history -- from Handel to Copeland,'' Mr. Welch explained, "and my hope is to provide a variety of some of my favourite music to share.'' The singer, who graduated from the University of New York at Buffalo with a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance, will be accompanied by 20-year-old Mandy Wong, who is currently studying piano and computer science at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

"She is a wonderful pianist, and I have been fortunate to work with someone who is so dedicated to being a good musician,'' Mr. Welch said. "She is young, but she plays beautifully, and she has a true passion for the art. I have found her to be very easy to work with.'' The duo met through Dr. Burgess, who teamed them up for the recital.

Mr. Welch leaves Bermuda shortly after the recital to audition for post-graduate studies towards a Master's degree, while Miss Wong returns to her studies at Wellesley next week.

Mandy Wong is the daughter of Dr. Roger and Mrs. Margeurite Wong. A graduate of the Bermuda High School for Girls, she first studied Suzuki piano with Mrs.

Marlene Campbell, and thereafter with Mrs. Ann Brown and Mrs. Jane Farge.

Sunday's recital begins at 8 p.m., and admission is $10.
