Spencer house featured in slide show
Slide Show, to be presented by the Bermuda Society of Arts tomorrow evening.
Ms. Jackie Taylor, currently on a visit to Bermuda, is one of the team of guides who regularly show visitors through Spencer House, in St. James's Place.
Her talk will trace the history, architecture and decoration of the house that was built for the first Earl Spencer, ancestor of the Princess of Wales.
A massive restoration project, undertaken five years ago, and funded by Lord Rothschild, is still in process, with nine state rooms so far completed.
Already, visitors from all over the world are flocking to see the unique architecture by John Vardy and James `Athenian' Stuart, which are among the first neo-classical interiors in Europe.
Stuart's superb gilded furniture has recently been returned by the Victoria and Albert Museum to its original location in Spencer House. There is also a fine collection of 18th century paintings and furniture, including five major Benjamin West paintings lent by the Queen.
Ms. Taylor's talk will take place in the National Gallery at 6 p.m. Admission is $7 ($5 for members) and wine and cheese will be served.
