Star Trek Voyager star still has fond memories of Island
An alien has beamed into Bermuda, stranded many light years away from home and exploring once familiar frontiers.
Mr. Garrett Wang, or perhaps more popularly known as Harry Kim, the communications and operations officer in deep space for Star Trek Voyager, has landed on the Island.
He is between seasons for the series, being made in Los Angeles, and enjoying a break on the Island where he spent about five years of his youth, while his father Dr. Ernest Wang worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
"I'm having a break,'' said Mr. Wang who leaves the Island today. "We started filming 20 episodes last September and finished in May. We start filming again for the next season on July 12.'' Mr. Wang, 26, left the Island when he was eight-years-old, but still has fond memories of the area. Despite being so young when he left, he still remembers how friendly it was, and still is.
"It's a lot more modern now, but still retains its British side. It's still just a friendly as it was when I was here,'' People, he added, still remembered his father from his time on the Island.
Mr. Wang trained as an actor for six years and has been acting professionally for the last two. "This is a good part for the amount of time I have been doing the job. It's a God-send,'' he said.
He has also noticed the "overwhelming'' popularity of the Star Trek series and the following it generates among fans, or `Trekkies', as they are known.
"I didn't know what following Star Trek had until I started shooting the series and making appearances at conventions. It's quite amazing,'' added Mr.
Wang.
His main interest, though, lies in writing and possibly directing a film. "My main ambition is to start writing and see where that takes me and I would also like to make my own film. I love acting, but the main avenue I want to follow is writing.''
