Students promote healthy lifestyle
hit on a novel plan to promote the concept of a healthier lifestyle among their peers.
Senior 5 students developed a presentation which included a skit, a junk food quiz, and an exercise segment, and presented it to P5 students at Dellwood Primary School.
"The idea of older students teaching younger students was ours,'' Government nutritionist Mrs. Betsy Baillie explained. "Last year during Education Month we noticed that primary students related well to secondary students, so this year the Health Department offered a workshop for secondary students and teachers, and Northlands was one of four schools to attend.'' The script for the skit, featuring two main characters, Mr. Bad Heart and Mr.
Good Heart, was conceived and presented entirely by the Northlands students, and as Mrs. Baillie foresaw, went down well with the Dellwood youngsters.
"After attending Mrs. Baillie's workshop on Heart Month I came back to my fellow students with the information and ideas,'' Anna Taylor explained. "We had just finished studying how fat and heart disease were related, and it was a great opportunity to put them into practice, and to teach younger students exactly what they learn in class, which I feel will help them with their exams.'' Following the skit, Northlands students highlighted results of a food quiz and showed the Dellwood children physical evidence of how much sugar and fat was contained in some of their favourite foods, including fruit rollups, fries, chips, chocolate pudding, pizzas and chocolate chip cookies.
The programme concluded with a participatory exercise segment.
PIGGING OUT -- Mr. Bad Heart, played by Charles St. Bernard, stuffs his face with junk food watched by fellow students from Northlands (including Mrs. Good Heart, Kathy Moniz, centre with scarf on head) and P5 students from Dellwood Primary School.
