James A. Edwards' taxi, which has an electric ramp and removable chairs for easy access, has been on the road for the past three weeks.

And Mr. Edwards said his customers are "very, very pleased'' with the service.

Mr. Edwards, who has been in the taxi business for more than ten years, said it was "his greatest dream'' to provide such a service for local residents and visitors to the Island.

He got the idea for the wheelchair-accessible taxi while visiting New York City.

And he took his idea to a Canadian factory to get a taxi custom-made for Bermuda's narrow roads.

"I like catering to the public and I've always liked being around older people,'' said Mr. Edwards.

"Providing this kind of service is my dream, because I love to help people,'' he added with a smile.
