Cal Ming's medical expenses have surpassed their goal of $50,000.

Head of the Cal Ming Fund-Raising Committee Mrs. Althea Overbey said a total of $62,957 was raised -- and donations were still coming.

Mrs. Overbey, who is community coordinator at the National Alcohol and Drug Agency, said Mr. Ming was overwhelmed at the generosity of residents.

"He expressed his pleasure and honour to know his country remembers him,'' she said.

Organisers managed to speak to Mr. Ming during the telethon, which featured entertainment and interviews with people whose lives Mr. Ming touched.

Average donations were $50, she said, noting one man had donated a painting to be auctioned off because he did not have much money to give.

The money raised will go towards assisting Mr. Ming and his family while he awaits a heart transplant in a Pittsburgh hospital.

Mr. Ming has been in the hospital awaiting a suitable heart since February.
