Variety is the spice of life -- and this month, gardeners have plenty of choice when it comes to selecting what to plant in their garden.

Local gardeners will be kept quite busy this month, for according to the Department of Agriculture just about any type of flower or vegetable can be planted during October.

Here is a list of the flowers and vegetables that can be planted during the month of October: Vegetables: artichokes, beets, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, runner beans, string beans, snap beans, broad beans, chives, Chinese cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, collards, chard, chicory, endive, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, mustard greens, onions, parsley, parsnips, peppers, peas, potatoes, radish, rutabaga, shallots, spinach, sweet potatoes, strawberries, thyme, tomatoes, turnips and watercress; Flowers: ageratum, antirrhinum, aster, aubrieta, begonia, bells of Ireland, candytuft, carnation, centaurea, chrysanthemum, cineraria, dahlia, dianthus, geranium, gerbera, gypsophila, impatiens, larkspur, lathyrus, nasturtium, nicotiana, pansy, petunia, phlox, rudbeckia, salipiglossis, salvia, statice, snow-on-the-mountain, spider flower, star-of-the-veldt, stock, sweet William, verbena and viola.
