The owner had lifted the bonnet to investigate a smell of smoke when flames leaped out at him, a spokesman said.
The man was unharmed, but the car was completely destroyed in the blaze, which was put down to an electrical fault in its wiring. Three fire engines and ten men attended.
Later on, at around 9 p.m., firemen were called out to Jones Village where a house was reportedly on fire.
Two fire engines were sent, but upon arrival they found the fire had been extinguished.
The spokesman said a pot left on the stove had started the blaze, which caused $300 worth of damage to some kitchen cabinets and a nearby microwave oven.
