ZBM news anchor resigns
will be off the air by the end of the month, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Various industry sources confirmed yesterday that Mrs. Wilson-Bell, a longtime fixture on the Bermuda Broadcasting Company's nightly television newscast, has submitted her resignation after more than five years as a full-time employee of ZBM's.
While some sources said she had long been thinking of leaving the station, others revealed that she was quitting ZBM over professional differences with fellow employee Ms Darlene Ming, tipped to be the station's next news director.
One source added that Ms Ming had circulated a memo last week in which she suggested that major changes would be introduced to the newsroom.
Among the changes that were cited were a new set of job descriptions and a demand that Mrs. Wilson-Bell vacate her current office.
Last night, Mrs. Wilson-Bell declined to comment on any of the reports, saying only: "I have nothing to say -- no comment whatsoever.'' And though BBC deputy general manager Mr. Rick Richardson was unavailable for questions yesterday, BBC operations manager Mr. Delano Ingham told The Royal Gazette : "There is a note to his (Mr. Richardson's) attention, but it hasn't been opened. He's off the Island.'' Mr. Ingham said he had no personal knowledge of Mrs. Wilson-Bell's resignation.
Mrs. Wilson-Bell, who does triple duty at ZBM as a field reporter, assignment editor and news anchor, began her career at the station as a teenager and had worked there intermittently before becoming a permanent employee in the late 1980s.
It was not clear yesterday what her future plans might be.
