Africa brings people close to nature
If you are dreaming of a unique African safari, local travel photographer, Lloyd Webbe, can turn your dream into a reality.
Visit Mount Kilamanjaro and its habitat of many wildlife species or learn the rhythms of nature and native tradition, which sound so loudly in Africa.
Vacation at your choice of exciting place and pace.
Mr. Webbe is very friendly and knowledgeable with years of experience travelling to Eastern Africa and Southern Africa and has excellent connections with the best African guides.
"My first impression of Africa was the great vastness of the continent, the friendliness of the people in remote areas and their keen ability to remember you although they have only met you once.
"It seems to be an innate talent for them and they learn English easily as well as European languages,'' he advised.
His tour business, Unique Safaris , was established in 1984, after visiting the Canadian Maritime.
He had the notion of organising and escorting groups from Bermuda interested in photography, a pre-paid independent tour of towns and fishing villages of Nova Scotia and the surrounding area. It was a big success so he de cided to try the bigger un dertaking of exotic Africa.
"The name, Unique, was carefully chosen and every effort is taken to live up to my slogan, `if it is Unique, the difference is clear','' advised Mr. Webbe.
Following a cocktail party in July of 1986, held to introduce the members, the first group of Unique Safari clients numbered 16 and ranged in ages between 11 and 65 years. They departed Bermuda for Kenya and Tanzania and had an amazing trip.
"The handlers in both countries helped me to provide an itinerary which allowed clients to experience the real Africa, visiting people in villages and in work places that were not on the tourist route, as well as the popular game parks and places of interest,'' Mr. Webbe said.
The Kirawira Camp of Western Serengeti is one of Mr. Webbe's highly recommended camps as it is the most luxurious in the world.
The guests experience Africa's majesty as if they are among the first to travel these extraordinary lands.
The camp, comprised of 25 luxury double tents, is set upon a hill with commanding views of endless savanna and the visitors feel close to the soul of the African wilderness.
Luxurious sleeping and bathing arrangements are complemented by valet service, superb meals made-to-order from house cuisine or from guest recipes. Here is created the ultimate safari ambience where lush vegetation surrounds the hillock and is home to a wide variety of big game such as the lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle and wildebeest.
"Without even leaving the camp, you can encounter a lot of the extraordinary bird life known to this area. It is excellent for guided walking and driving safaris and nature walks.
"Fishing excursions and sumptuous bush luncheons are popular. From behind specially built blinds, you can observe crocodiles feeding by Grumeti River,'' Mr. Webbe said.
There are numerous Serena Safari Lodges throughout Africa renown for their beauty and comfort with impeccable service. A fascinating lodge is the Ngorongoro Serena, which is built into the rim of a dormant volcano. Close by lies the Olduvai Gorge, the "birthplace of man''.
Mr. Webbe explained, "The volcano and surrounding landscape are part of a vast conservation area inhabited by the Masai tribe, and a variety of big game. Most of the guest rooms have private terraces with views of the crater floor where countless animals make their home. You feel in perfect harmony with the natural environment and the wildlife.'' Cultural events include Masai dancing and in the evenings a choir or guitarist performs for guests.
Shopping for safari clothing in Nairobi is easy through negotiations with the largest outlet in that city. Cameras and binoculars can be rented for the duration of a safari. Film can be purchased from a reliable camera store, minimising the problem of x-ray machines at airports.
Mr. Webbe offers a 10-day honeymoon package in Kenya or Tanzania for about $9,000.00 including airfare. The airfares are the most expensive part of the tours and is about $4000 per couple.
The average travel time for other tours ranges from 16 days to a month. The month trip is about $10,000 and covers South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and travel on the Rovos Rail, the most luxurious train in the world.
Clients have commented of Unique Safaris: "A different kind of holiday. Every minute a lasting experience. Worth all the effort,'' said Ken Hubbard.
"An eye opening, horizon broadening yes even educational trip. My wildest dreams and overactive imagination couldn't even come close to the reality of this trip,'' said Margo Mulder.
"We are constantly upgrading our safaris in regards to destinations, air carriers and accommodations. I am pleased to travel to Africa where so many people live in close harmony with nature and where the predator and prey seem to co-exist,'' concluded Mr. Webbe.
