The Loyal Hill Community Association brought the Gotham City Dare Devils to Bermuda for demonstrations at Loyal Hill park.

Keith Simmons, of the Loyal Hill Community Association, invited all Government and some private summer day camps to the event on July 2 and 3 - a total of about 300 children.

"The Loyal Hill BMX Club is trying to promote the sport of BMX and safety among Bermuda's youth, and the Daredevils are helping us do that,'' said Mr.

Simmons. The Daredevils used tricks to maintain the children's attention as they informed them of the importance of precautionary measures when biking.

The exhibition involved several tricks on Trek stunt bikes, including ramp jumping and 360-degree airborne turns. A volunteer member of the audience was also selected to participate and awarded with a Daredevils jersey.

"The tricks were exciting,'' said a fascinated Dishon Burgess of Hibiscus Camp at West Pembroke School.

Following their exhibition, the Daredevils were presented with a plaque containing a Bermuda map. "Our goal was for the kids to learn the importance of helmets and pads when biking,'' said Warren Marchese of the Daredevils.

In attendance for the spectacle, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Yvette Swan, said: "This is a wonderful initiative. The Loyal Hill Community Associate is always doing something good for the community -and this is another example of that.'' The four freestyle bikers who constitute the Gotham City Daredevils are from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. They have travelled to Bermuda three times, including a lengthy stay in 1988 and a visit last year. The group formed in 1987, and have an impressive communal resume - one member recently travelled to the X-Games while another has appeared on the popular daytime talk show "Regis and Kathy Lee.'' When at home in the United States, the bikers hold a demonstration every weekend.

The cost of bringing the Daredevils to Bermuda was subsidised by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation, The Bank of Bermuda, Telecom, Winners Edge, Island Construction Service, Island Steel Specialist, Albert Woolridge Trucking, and Chris Shanks Trucking. In addition to the demonstrations for children, the Daredevils appeared on Front Street during Harbour Nights on July 1 and met at Loyal Hill's North Shore track on July 4.
