An apple for the teacher!
every year during education month. Thanks to Supermart president Mr. Tredick Gorham, the old aphorism -- an apple for the teacher -- peals true on Thank a Teacher Day, which was scheduled for February 13 this year. Mr. Gorham said the Supermart has been sending apples to the Island's teachers on Thank a Teacher Day for the last four or five years and will continue to do so. Mr.
David Lopes of ZBM initiated the apple drive when he started thanking teachers on the radio during education month, said Mr. Gorham. "So we decided to do something just to let the teachers know we're thinking of them. "Teachers have a tough job and it seems to be getting tougher. "We want them to know that someone appreciates them,'' he said. There are approximately 1,000 teachers on the Island so the Supermart sends 1,000 apples to the schools, where the principles distribute them to the teachers, said Mr. Gorham. "We pack the apples up and label them on the Saturday before they are sent out,'' said Mr. Gorham. "Then we get taxis to pick them up first thing on Monday morning. The schools receive them by ten a.m.,'' he said. The Supermart, in turn, gets lots of letters from various teachers thanking them for the gesture. "Teachers really appreciate it,'' he said.
