Angelo hits the right notes on the road to stardom
of his achievements.
All of Bermuda can share in his success this Saturday when Angelo Mitchell's `You're My Everything (Wedding Bells)' is played on Walt (Baby) Love's `Countdown' on Power 95 FM radio.
This is a major achievement, and according to Angelo's publicist, Mr. Lorin Smith, this rarely occurs.
"I got the telephone call from Walt on Thursday,'' Mr. Smith said from his Hollywood hotel, where he is currently promoting Angelo's CD to radio stations on the West Coast of the US.
"Walt told me that he will play the single `Wedding Bells' on his countdown next week. This is unheard of. It's a phenomenon.
"Walt never plays an unknown artist on the countdown, which is heard in 157 markets in the US, and 70 countries around the world, including the UK, Germany, and Caribbean. This is not child's play.'' Indeed, Mr. Love told Smith:" Your man has got something, and he is ready to go. This is not something we do, and we play the 20 hottest hits in the country. Angelo has quality.'' Mr. Smith said: "I was so happy, I almost cried. Here we have a foreign song from a little known country (on the music scene, and doing so well).'' Even countries in the Caribbean are getting in on the act: "They're playing Angelo in Barbados, it's now on a syndicated radio programme there. Jamaican Power 106 wants to come to Bermuda to do a special on Angelo.
"The industry's response to Angelo has been very encouraging. I have met with the president of an independent record company about Angelo's project and also with an entertainment attorney who is impressed with Angelo's CD and is interested in discussing the possibility of representing him.'' Impact magazine, the leading black/urban music report in the United States, has heaped praise on Angelo's effort: "The best-selling record by a Bermudian artist that the island has ever seen,'' the report reads, "We include it here because the stateside potential is so obvious, we'll be shocked if a major does not snatch up the `You're My Everything' CD! "Recorded in Atlanta, Angelo's voice is reminiscent of Teddy Pendergrass and is a natural for adult-oriented radio...'' Black Radio Exclusive's June 3 issue adds: "... this balladeer has a sound that's certain to catch on with the older females. It charms with a lovely style of vocal that's warming and very pleasing in all aspects. Angelo has the vocals and the song to attract programmers on the mainland with potential to invade the `quiet storm' format.'' Black Radio Exclusive is one of America's leading weekly music trade publications, and research and music editor Terry Muggleton reviewed Angelo's CD. The publication has a subscriber base of over 112,000 and is widely read by entertainment attorneys, record company executives, radio programmers, artist managers, and other music industry professionals.
The New York Amsterdam News trumpets: "With his debut album `You're My Everything' creating the kind of excitement that's usually reserved for the album releases of major international recording artists, Bermudian singer-songwriter Angelo Mitchell stands poised to set the music world on its ear with a wonderfully crafted collection of ballads and mid-tempo tracks which should satisfy any musical palate.'' One of the more interesting phenomena is that there is an appetite for Angelo's original music. This is no copy-cat artist who takes the hit of the day and turns it into his personal interpretation.
Angelo's demo tape was released last year to test the market. Glenn Blakeney of Power 95 FM put it on the air, and immediately there was a great response.
The Royal Gazette asked Angelo why he writes the kind of music he does. From song number one, every selection is tastefully done, there are no overt sexual references or profanity, as is common with so much of toady's popular music.
Angelo said: "What I wanted to accomplish was a beautiful, pleasing melody, music that you can dance to either fast or slow.
"The album was written about relationships, both positive and negative. It is all about the beauty of expressing love. It is music that serves as a confirmation.'' And the audience is crossing all boundaries, from the young to the well, not-so-young.
"The younger set also seems to be liking the love songs -- especially the `why can't we try' ones.'' There are songs expressing feelings -- `Sweet Denise,' a tribute to Angelo's wife, is a perfect delivery of telling a woman the things she likes to hear -- a `tell me you love me' kind of song.
"I love to write love songs expressing the relationship between a man and a woman,'' Angelo says.
"Down the road, I will get into songs about relationships with others, but for now this is `soothing' music.'' Angelo is finding his music is not based so much on today's writing style -- so many songs are just repetitive words. He says that much of his audience -- especially the Europeans, are telling him that they just enjoy the words themselves.
This album promotes romance as opposed to sex.
Angelo says that people are stopping him on the streets for his autograph, are buying multiple copies as gifts for friends, and the whole response is somewhat "overwhelming.'' "People are telling me it is a hot project. I appreciate the fact that they like original music.
"My song `Girl' has great depth. It is about two people being in the position where "we've got to make a decision, and we need to know where this situation is going. It's a serious song of a love that is destined not to fail, but is weak. The lyrics are really hitting people and these songs last.'' The album is selling to a large cross-section of the community -- even the church. Angelo recalls spending his childhood singing gospel music, and says that he would never write a song that would offend anyone -- least of all a Christian. He professes to be a Christian, saying: "Jesus is in my heart. As soon as music starts getting sexual, I become disinterested. I know there's a market for that kind of music, but I believe in writing romantic songs.'' And with his humility, and that great voice, Angelo Mitchell has just begun to show his talent, he hasn't stopped to rest on his laurels, but says: "I have enough songs written for another two albums, wait and see!'' Undoubtedly he will go far. It is evident by having made the `Top 20'. Tune in on Saturday to Power 95, and throw your support behind one of Bermuda's own! RISING STAR -- Bermudian Angelo Mitchell.
