of a new book loaded with photographs of passenger liners.

The cover of Era of the Passenger Liner, by Nicholas T. Cairis, features a photograph of Mr. Card's oil painting of the Cunard Line's Caronia , sailing on rough waters in the North Atlantic in about 1907.

Inside, the book also has a photograph of Mr. Card's painting of the new Statendam . The Holland America Line ship is to arrive in Bermuda for the first time on April 19.

Mr. Card said the 288-page book, which contains black and white photographs, statistics, and background on 280 passenger liners from yesterday and today, is intended more for the general public than the serious shipping enthusiast.

"It's quite a good book,'' he said.

A review in Via, published by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, describes the book as "highly-informative''.

"With this volume, the maritime enthusiast now has an authoritative source that sets a nostalgic reading atmosphere,'' the review says.

"The book attempts to capture the past.'' The book reflected 20 years of research and covered cruise lines from Austro-Americana Line to Zim-Israel Lines, the book said.

Also featured in the hard-cover coffee table book are Cunard Line, French, Line, Greek Line, Holland-America Line, Home Lines, Italian Line, North German Lloyd, Norwegian-America Line, Polish Ocean Lines, Portuguese Line, Red Star Line, Russian State Lines, Scandinavian-American Line, Spanish Line, and United States Lines.

Published by Pegasus Books in Massachusetts, the book retails for $49.95.
