major production by the Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

The King and I, by Rodgers & Hammerstein will be presented at City Hall from October 14-23.

And now, producer Mrs. Marjorie Stanton is hoping that as many people as possible will attend auditions, to be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

"This is a big show, and we need children as well as adults. I would urge anyone who is interested to come along. We are looking for new faces and we are sure that there are some talented people in Bermuda whom we don't know about.'' The production will be directed by Annette Hallett, with musical direction by Marjorie Pettit. Barbara Frith will be the choreographer, with Liz Campbell in charge of costumes.

Mrs. Pettit says she believes this will be a very popular show: "There is something for everyone. There are wonderful melodies, such as Hallo Young Lovers, Getting to Know You, I Whistle a Happy Tune, We Kiss in a Shadow and Shall We Dance.

"There is also a strong accent on dancing in The King and I, with a ballet that is complete in itself. People may not realise that this musical, based on a true story, deals with the subject of slavery. The King wants to westernise Siam but doesn't know how to go about it -- and cannot see the evil in slavery.'' Mrs. Pettit says that the story of Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher-Stowe, is choreographed as a ballet within the play, "so there will be great scope for dancers as well as singers in this production.'' Auditions will be held at the Bermuda High School on Thursday, April 15 and Friday, April 16, between 6 and 10 p.m.. Boys and girls from seven years of age upward, will be auditioned on Saturday, April 17 between 1.30 and 6 p.m.

Audition music is available at Daylesford Theatre each day this week after 6 p.m.

Mrs. Stanton asks anyone interested in taking part in The King and I to telephone her as soon as possible at 295-3218 for an appointment.
