historic election victory last November he decided to commemorate the event on canvas.

And yesterday Premier Jennifer Smith got to see Mr. Bassett's interpretation of that momentous night at the official unveiling of `Victory Dance' at the artist's Regal Gallery on Reid Street.

The mixed media work of art features a Gombey dancer surrounded by a montage of newspaper headlines taken from The Royal Gazette the day after the Election. Also portrayed are all 34 candidates who stood for the party at the polls.

"What happened that night is historical in that we had a PLP Government for the first time in 30 years,'' Mr. Bassett said. "As an artist I don't limit myself to what's going on politically because you can't separate what's going on in politics from life.

"After the General Election many people had high levels of anticipation and expectation and that's what inspired me to paint this.'' The Premier was clearly impressed with Mr. Bassett's work.

"I am delighted that the Bermudian internationally renowned artist Robert Bassett has chosen to memorise the PLP victory as a significant moment in Bermuda's history,'' Ms Smith said.

"The exuberance of the moment has been captured for all time and I am very pleased to be able to see this painting. Hopefully we will have it hanging somewhere, even if it is on loan.'' Mr. Bassett said that he had received numerous inquiries from several interested parties but would not confirm if a buyer had been found.

But a limited edition of 850 signed prints will be on sale at the gallery on Saturday priced at $100 each.
