Bermuda dancing to a new song
which has taken the world by storm.
DJ Jose from Holland played European house music at three parties held last Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Clayhouse Inn.
Saturday's party was the most dynamic with more than 200 people jammed into the club to hear the 32-year-old mix along side Bermudian DJ Kevin `Styles' Sousa.
DJ Kevin `Styles' is accustomed to New York style house music whose techno beat distinguishes it from the more mellow and vocal European style.
The two DJs participated in a friendly `war' in which they took turns spinning records until the early hours of the morning.
In addition to the music, those attending the parties were treated to acts by professional dancers and bodybuilders.
And Industry Production promoter Paul DeCouto said he felt that house music would become a big hit in Bermuda.
"I give it six months for house music to catch up to hip hop and R&B,'' he told The Royal Gazette . "Tunnels, a large dance club in Manhattan, used to only play hip hop, R&B and reggae, now house music has taken over.'' Mr. DeCouto said this was the third weekend that parties had been held in the newly renovated club which sports a new sound system and state of the art lighting.
DJ Jose, who leaves the Island today, spent the rest of his time doing promotions for radio station MIX 106 and vacationing with his girlfriend Alinda Delfgaauw.
And as soon as he returns to Holland he will be the DJ for an after party of the Olympic Gay Games in Holland.
He turned down other offers to DJ during the Olympic Gay Games, which attracts over 20,000 people, in order to come to Bermuda.
Jose's main DJ job is at an afternoon club called La Ti Do in Zaandam near Amsterdam where he works every Sunday.
"The club is opened from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sundays for people who do not like to go out on Saturday nights,'' he explained.
He also is the DJ at parties and on party cruises.
DJ Jose delved into the world of music production at age 14 when he started his own pirate radio station.
He began mixing various kinds of music at age 19. But for the past seven years he has concentrated solely on house music.
"There are so many clubs that only play house music,'' he said. "It started off small but now it is played everywhere.'' GOING DUTCH -- DJ Jose from Holland played European house music at the Clayhouse Inn.
