British conductor will lead orchestra course

Foundation's fourth annual summer orchestral course in August.

Thirty-one members of the North Gloucestershire Schools Orchestra (NGSO) will join local music students on the course which will culminate with a gala concert to be held in the Anglican Cathedral on Friday, September 4.

Mrs. Suzanne Dunkerley, of the Menuhin Foundation, is urging students who would like to participate to register for the course as soon as possible.

Musical activities, which will begin on August 25, will include five days of intensive study, training and rehearsals at the Bermuda High School for Girls.

Registration for the course is open to all suitably qualified musicians under 20 years of age. This includes local students and those studying overseas who may be on the Island during the period.

NGSO students will be hosted by local families, many of whose children participate in the Menuhin Foundation programme.

The planned repertoire for the course will be Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, the Karelia Suite by Sibelius and Symphony No. 2 by Borodin.

Peter Stark won major honours while he was a student of the violin and conducting at the Royal College of Music. He has conducted for the famed Welsh National Opera and in 1988, conducted the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Hall. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Violin to the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and then became Head of Strings at the Purcell School in London.

Accommodation is still needed for a few of the visitors and Mrs. Dunkerley would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help.

Registration forms for Menuhin Foundation students are available from their teachers. Other interested students are asked to call Mrs. Dunkerley at 292-0754, fax 292-6600 for forms or further information.

Mr. Peter Stark.
