Bryson takes to the mike in gala night for charity
Award-winning vocalist Peabo Bryson will headline a local charity gala to raise funds for a new Cancer Resource Centre.
The Grammy award-winning artist will be the star attraction at the Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association's Spring Concert Gala 2000 on April 29.
Accompanied by an 18-piece band, the 25-year music veteran will serenade locals with his soulful hits including `Beauty and the Beast', recorded with Celine Dion, and `Tonight I Celebrate my Love' recorded with Roberta Flack.
Under the distinguished patronage of Deputy Governor Tim Gurney, the black tie event will take place in the Atlantic Rooms of the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel at 6 p.m.
In addition to the concert, the $200 per head event will include a cocktail reception, a five-course dinner and performances by local entertainers Preston Swan and magicians Mr. Magic and Mr. Slick.
Proceeds from the gala event will help kick-off Bermuda TB Cancer and Health's capital campaign to raise funds to build the Island's first Cancer Resource Centre.
In addition to providing mammography and bone densitometre tests, officials hope the new Cancer Resource Centre will allow the Association to offer individual counselling and meeting space for support groups, a co-ordinated approach to cancer diagnosis and treatment and provide comprehensive cancer information to the community.
The Association, which is one of Bermuda's oldest charities, has spent more than half a century attempting to educate the Island about cancer and its prevention. This year marks the TB Cancer and Health Association's 55th anniversary.
For those eager to support the Association, but are unable to attend the event, organisers are holding a raffle with an array of fabulous prizes.
Each $25 raffle ticket offers individuals the chance to win a $26,000 Citroen station wagon from Star Motors, a round-the-world business class ticket courtesy of Franklin Travel or a three-seater Yamaha Jet Ski and trailer from A&P Marine.
Other prizes up for grabs include an 18-karat and diamond necklace from Crisson's, $5,200 worth of groceries from Miles Market, two RC 100 cc Tornado Bikes and a case of 1992 Dom Perignon from Cosmopolitan Liquors.
Raffle tickets and concert tickets are available at the TB Cancer and Health Association on Cedar Avenue in Hamilton.
