Island's "helping agencies'' is one step closer.

The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse has established a new base on Reid Street and its ultimate aim is to use the offices as a centre for many caring organisations.

It would then become a "one-stop'' shop for people who have problems with drug and alcohol abuse, or others who want information on various issues.

Included would be a multi-media service, where young people for example could find out information on drugs.

Planning permission had been applied for the new building, The Stables, to convert it from retail use to office and institutional use.

A CADA spokesman said the initial move would enable four helping agencies to come under one roof, whereas previously they all used separate buildings.

It is hoped the resource centre will be established by the end of the year.
